Biomimicry
Nature and natural materials are important as both as models and as resources for Interface as the company strives for sustainability.
Biomimicry
Biomimicry, as described by Janine Benyus, is the practice of using nature as a model to develop sustainable designs and processes.
The basic principles of Biomimicry, or the way in which nature operates, below, show a route toward sustainability:
- Nature runs on sunlight
- Nature uses only the energy it needs
- Nature fits form to function
- Nature recycles everything
- Nature rewards cooperation
- Nature banks on diversity
- Nature demands local expertise
- Nature curbs excesses from within
- Nature taps the power of limits
The use of biomimicry principles in our design and development processes has resulted in several successful product designs and innovations:
Spring Leaf™
- Carpet tile inspired by the “organized chaos” of the forest floor
- Faster installation with significantly less waste
TacTiles®
- Carpet tile installation system, inspired by many examples of adhesion without glue in nature, eliminates need for glue – No VOCs
- Allows carpet tile installation on hard surfaces without damaging the substrate
